Dean 441 Catamaran

It took us 2 years to decide which boat to buy, comparing all the catamarans on the market and visiting as many boat shows we could. We had almost made our choice when we discovered the Dean 441 along with many other catamarans at La Rochelle Boat Show 2007. Being a small South African manufacturer, Dean gets very little media exposure and remains virtually unknown to the public.

As soon as we stepped on the boat, we knew it was our final choice. It felt strongly built, nicely decorated and far better finished. It was all the opposite of charter catamarans – a complete contrast from most of the boats we had looked at.

Having sailed around the Caribbean extensively – both as a couple and as a large family, we know the boat will meet most people’s needs – capable of sleeping up to 8 people but not too large for couples to handle.

Safety

Our first impressions were confirmed: the Dean is a very strong boat in heavy weather, which was highly reassuring for an unskilled family crew as ours. We got caught on several occasions in storms during night navigations, with the main high, unable to reef and we never experienced any damage.

Speed was not a criteria at first. After sailing for one year and often with many other boats, we realized we were amongst the fastest. I must confess after all that leading the fleet is very satisfying. Even when sailing for pleasure, our ego needs to be flattered!

Small Crew

We left South Africa with a crew of six, believing it was necessary for such a boat, but very soon we realized, two were enough and on some occasions I found myself handling the boat on my own, with no problem.
